Family Giving Through ACT-The Ohana Project

In this compelling story, hear how one Saranac Lake family made a difference by starting with a simple pair of questions: how can we make a personal and immediate impact on individuals in this economically challenging year; and how can we begin to make a positive long-term impact on the welfare of our Ohana? To learn what an Ohana is, read the article in our SPRING 2009 NEWSLETTER. Click the following link to see a list of the Ohana Project Donors.

Feeding Hungry Families-Food Pantries in the Adirondack Region

The winter of 2008/2009 poses great difficulties for North Country families who struggle to meet the rising cost of food and fuel. Likewise, our food pantries will be pressed with more needy customers and a potential drop in donations.

To help meet this challenge, ACT and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York convened volunteers and staff from local food pantries. The gathering on August 20, 2008 provided an opportunity for over 30 food pantry representatives to identify challenges, share success stories and brainstorm strategies to increase volunteer recruitment and publicity about their pressing needs.

Brian Mann, Adirondack Bureau Chief for North Country Public Radio, presented ways to collaborate with local media, conduct a site visit, and getting your message out. The majority of this session was spent dicussing the most effective ways to tell the story. The key elements included, "How do I feed my kids today?", "Let no baby go to bed hungry", and "Donate $1, it buys 8lbs. of food".

Another outcome was the creation of a regional contact list of all the food pantries serving the Adirondacks. This tool will allow everyone to volunteer or donate dollars or food to help their neighbors.

To make a donation from your fund at ACT to a local food pantry, call the ACT office at 518-523-9904 or e-mail andrea@generousact.org.
